No need for plaster of paris, you can soup down the drywall mud, not much tho, and obtain the same results. You can do several coats and use a rag or sponge, whichever gives you the desired texture.
Another option would be to get the soup on a large paint brush and 'fling' it at the repaired spot to get the 'lumps' then knock it down with a wet rag.
I've matched plaster in homes raging from 40-150 years old with these techiniques.
When its done feather the new paint into the old for a larger circle and see if you get lucky on the color, you may have to try several times before you get it right.
The patch will 'go away' in a few weeks, as you will all stop looking up!
