what about renting one of the ceiling texture sprayers and spraying the patch with it? You might be better off sanding a larger section down, taping off the undamaged part, and spraying the texture on. I've never done it myself, and I don't really know what I'm talking about, but if I was in your spot, that's what I would do. Let us know how your repair works...I've got a hole in the ceiling for some stupid light fixture that I'll never install, and would love to cover it up.
Check to make sure the existing ceiling colour matches the stuff you want to spray though, otherwise you'll probably have to repaint the whole ceiling...that's a whole lot of work that you don't want to do if you don't have to.
