Just went through the same thing....
had the outside line checked by Comcast to be sure squirrels weren't eating the line again.
Next, since my house does not have an interface, I went to the first room cable enters, and plugged in the modem. Didn't work. So off to Comcast to exchange for a new one, and all is better.
Note, however, that my modem was almost 5 years old. Comcast was shocked.. their normal life is about 18 months.
