As far as uses there are tons. I primarily use mine for wheel bearings and bushings. I ocasionally use it for ball joints, but prefer to use my on car ball joint press for that if I can so I don't have to remove the control arm.

I had the Harbor freight 12 ton unit (I got it on sale for 99.99) I used it a lot and it worked ok. I pushed many bearings in and out with it. The one thing I did not like about it was that although it was strong, it was not very stiff. When pushing out something that was particularly tight the hydraulic jack would stretch the entire press an imperceptable amount, but it was storing energy. When it finally hit the force required for the part to come out, it would do so with a loud bang as exerything relaxed.

I decided that it was a bit too unnerving so I sold it to a friend and picked up the harbor freight 20 ton unit. It is much stiffer, but still "bangs" out the occasional tight part.

At work we have a huge Dake unit. It never bangs parts out. Just pushes smooth as silk. It probably costs over a grand though.

Summary:

I owned the 12 ton and 20 ton harbor freight units for the extra seventy bucks, the 20 ton unit is worth it. It is stiffer and the area between the pillars is larger. (I was able to put the case of my FWD van trans between the supports of the 20 ton unit, but not those of the 12 ton unit.
