Operating systems have their semi-religous zealots and their flamers, just like there are those on this board who swear by what engine they have in their Saab.
There are advantages and disadavantages to each; in the end it boils down to a calculus of features, performance, and reliability.
Just as a 99 owner may not want anything to do with something that's not an 8-valve motor, geeks (and I can say "geeks" in a qualified sense, being one my self) have their favorite, and find whatever reasons they can to hate all the others.
This, of course, leaves aside the whole Windows vs. Linux flame-war, which is kind of like Diesel vs. gasoline engines. People who like diesels are a lot like the Linux guys; they're mostly outnumbered (at least in the USA) by the other variety, they accept it's noisier, harder to get support, parts, or even fuel, but they think everyone else is insane for not driving something that is as efficient and has as much power (torque) as what they've got.
Come to think of it, the diesel engine and Linux are both named after their inventor.
