I think you'll find definate evidence suggesting that SUVs are responsible for a disproportionate number of rear end accidents. Also, although I have never seen any evidence I am convinced that after you control for relevant driver factors SUVs are involved in a disproportionate number of head on (or other center line crossing type) accidents. This seems consistent with accident news accounts I have been seeing in recent years too. At any rate I know darn well that they are the vehicle most likely to stray over into my lane when driving.
I agree idiots are idiots and bad drivers are bad drivers and they can do lots of destruction with any vehicle. We should do something about incompetence. However, I also think it takes more competence and reserve to drive a wallowing beasty as the reserve margin for safe operation is much lower. When those factors don't prevail the risk of accident is higher. Finally, when something does happen it is often far more destructive. Because of the SUV arms race it is estimated there have been thousands more deaths than otherwise would have occurred during the same period.
Finally, for the record I grew up around SUVs and European sedans. The SUV/Truck has a place but I don't get their appeal as a general passenger vehicle at all. Why would anyone give up the joy of a responsive car for a wallowing beast. Although way things are going I sometime wonder why I don't just through in the towel and get a freightliner. At least I could see to back out of a parking space.
