If you work in lower Manhattan (and live in nj)-- you will have both NY State and NJ State taxes. NY State taxes are a killer.
Also -- where are you coming from - are you used to this kind of commute? From NJ the commute to lower Manhattan is drastically improved with the World Trade Center PATH station open again -- but will require at least one transfer, no matter where you come from.
I live in northern NJ, on the Midtown Direct train line. Now goes (without transfers) right into Manhattan.
The same line goes into Hoboken, where you can take the ferry or PATH to lower Manhattan.
If you take a train on the Northeast Corrider Line -- you'll get off in Newark and take the PATH downtown. (or, longer, go into Manhattan, take the PATH downtown)
Getting from CT side downtown is a bear -- trains go into Grand Central, not Penn Station.
Unless you LOVE and are passionare about the NYC job, consider living & working in NJ!
