Here's my cut on TKC's list: Maplewood, Millburn, Short Hills, Summit, Chatham, Murray Hill, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Madison, Morristown. They offer the best commute to lower Manhattan or Jersey City.
Take train from any of these towns to Hoboken or midtown(Penn Station) as TKC described. Train splits at Summit, so most frequent service from Summit downstream. Or drive to Jersey City right down route 78 is OK, but rush hour drive to Manhattan pita, so better to take train.
Off rush drive to NYC is piece of cake 30 min +/-. Easy on weekends, etc.
Schools are good in all of these well-established and mid to very upscale areas, but taxes are high. Takes do get somewhat lower as you go west, but then the commute gets worse and you can end up in a new development in a cornfield.
I have lived in Summit for 12 years and like it. Shameless plug...my wife is an agent at Lois Schneider Realtor, which covers the whole area and is based in Summit. 908-522-1251 Ask for Stephanie Kramer.
