I have home-made one for Yakima Posted by JimBlake [Email] (#141) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JimBlake) on Mon, 8 Mar 2004 09:22:16 In Reply to: Bike rack for tandem - recommendation?, Derek in Durham, Mon, 8 Mar 2004 06:41:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I made something that works for our tandem. It's an older Motobecane, sorta heavy, so I figured the bottom tube was strong enough...
I used the front fork-mount from a standard Yak bike carrier. I just carved up a block of wood into a cradle for the bottom tube. Bend an aluminum strap to go over the tube, loooong carriage bolts & wing nuts hold it all together.
The bike sits quite far back, and I was able to open the hatch ('89 C900) carefully until the window rested against the back tire. You couldn't just 'throw open' the hatch. (I haven't put it on the 9³ yet.)
Since the genuine Yak tandem carrier puts the bike farther forward on the car, I suppose you'll be able to open the hatch.
