Lots of dealers do this nowadays. Fact is sales at my ex-car dealer have been so hot, they couldn't keep the service dept. staffed proportionate to service demands. Take that as you want.

Needless to say, after driving a bunch of their loaners...which yeah the convertible WAS tempting (I do have positive blood flow)...I deferred until my ex-car reached its 11th year. Call it inertia, satisfaction, or other uses for the dough.

What changes this is a decision to change AND a test drive disguised as a loaner. Problem is that changes in my ex-car's manufacture quality and dealer service level destroyed reasons for owning.

So like a good cave man, Lud went out. Lud find new car. Lud hit car with club. Lud bring car home. Lud grunt, "Dis better: Lud now drive Saab."

A favorable test drive when you're good and ready to buy beats all the test drives when you're not. And if test drives simply confirm the decision NOT to buy, they defeat the dealer's purpose. Whole process has to be on message that the manufacturer, the dealer and the service guys want you to drive their car....and then the car has to be good. The integration of these elements makes it hard to take one in spite the other these days. I think VW (and Audi) and Benz suffer from their past successes overwhelming them at a time of tremendous change within the technology of the vehicles. Not a good mix.

With this my first Saab, I'm shooting in the dark as to what I'll get. But I do know that my ex-car company, dealer and service system had fallen down on the job.

Lud
