My wife needed the external one on her mini-van, perhaps because of the slope of the windshield.
She has a Pontiac Transport. The Valentine 1 radar detector manual mentions that as one model in which the V1 won't work well because of some windshield coating, so that may also be part of the problem.
In any case, she's never had a problem with the external one in the Houston system. The new ones are pretty slim and not any uglier than the kind that go on the windshield, IMHO.
The internal one works fine in my 9-3, too, so I'd say you're OK either way.
By the way, congratulations on the move, Yank. I know you've been looking forward to it.
Best regards,
Dave
