I used escrow.com to purchase a pricy bicycle over the internet, from a guy in Utah. Basically it works like this, I send money in the escrow account. Escrow.com then notifies the seller that the funds are available. He sends the item to me. Upon receipt, I review the item to make sure it is in described condition, then notify Escrow.com that I accept the item. Escrow.com then ships payment to the seller. They charged maybe 25 dollars for a 600 dollar purchase for this service. It was a small price to pay for the peace of mind.
I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be a reasonable way to conduct a transaction on an auto.
