Interesting, I just helped a coworker do the exact things you are talking about; except she is 24! She was in the same situation, no credit and was randomly applying for credit cards to no avail.
First thing- stop applying for random credit cards. Go to your bank, explain your situation and get a SECURED credit card issued through them. As someone else mentioned, you allow them to hold a certain amount of money which you can borrow off of (usually several hundred). Then purchase things each month on the card and pay off the bill each month. After 6 months of this you'll be able to get a regular credit card and dump the secured.
If you have a credit union through your work, most definitely see them about a car loan. Ask them specifically if you can get a loan through them WITHOUT a cosigner. Do not offer one immediately as they will take you up on it (decreases their risk). With getting a small auto loan and the cc, you'll have great credit in no time. You are doing the most important part right now, asking questions and getting advice from a lot of sources. Keep it up!
Cheers,
Justin
