I actually worked with the author of that piece, maybe 15 years ago, when we were both automotive consultants. Good guy.
When you think about it, some of what he says is fairly accurate. Look at some of the stuff we deal with on our Saabs and it makes some domestics look great, and Japanese cars look almost perfect. At least electrically and mechanically. But what he doesn't get into is the stuff you can't quantify, like the way European cars feel. Steering. Truly comfortable seats. Ability on all kinds of roads (for Saabs anyway!)
OTOH, domestics have an amazing indifference to maintenance and are pretty durable if even semi-reasonably maintained. The downside is they have mostly bad seats, numb steering, lousy ergonomics, often bland (or worse) styling, and are just not fun to drive. Ditto for many Japanese cars. Still, if you get in a Crown Vic or Town Car or big Caddy from a car service in Chicago or New York City, take a look at the odometer. I've been in many with 300K on them, and they are running fine.
Strange, but no car maker seems able to blend the best features of a Euro car with the reliability of a Japanese car. It's kinda amazing that no one has.
