in 1986 when my 84 C900 went out of warranty. It was a Mercedes-Saab-Subaru dealership (now out of biz) and I got tired of being treated with contempt for *only* owning a Saab, and being able to speak with some solid mechanical knowledge of the car. It's hard for them to BS you when you know what they are trying to do. If they treated Saab owners badly, I can only imagine what they did to Suby owners.
I went to near total DIY after that, as the only nearby Saab indy turned out to be a pirate.
The dealer who sold us a Volvo 940 T wagon was the same, and was either incompetent or preferred to give a lesser level of service to people who bought the certifed used cars.
The Ford dealer for my wife's car was not a whole lot different. Then it changed hands and got worse.
My 9000, bought used, sees only an indy and me, as does the old 900. My indy isn't perfect but I know he's being straight with me, and he knows I can go elsewhere. And he likes the fact that I have decent tech knowledge. He will use reman or used parts when appropriate, and I can bring in my own. Will give DIY advice, too.
Like any other business, dealers vary widely in quality and skill. All you need to start one, really, is money, and customer satisfaction comes down to the dealer's corporate culture, approach to doing business, and the quality of his people.
That's my .02, anyway.
