to fix. New cars are generally safer but many new cars use large components or ready made assemblies and they are not meant to be replaced piece meal. Main reason is to save on assembly cost and labor time. In essence, auto makers pass on the expense to the consumers in the form of expensive repairs.
A simple example would be the bumper covers on new cars. The bumper covers are huge one piece from side to side, some including part of the front grille or lights. So when you hit something substantial, the whole cover has to be replaced plus the actual bumper materials beneath the cover. Also, the bumper cover is usually jammed up against lighting assemblies and the lighting assemblies would nicely get crushed when the bumper cover is hit hard. So instead of replacing a bumper, you need to replace the cover, the buffer beneath the cover as well as light assemblies directly on the cover or right next to the cover.
