6 speeds and skip shift......

As I remember some of the first 6 speeds were GM Corvettes and Camaros. The 6 speed gave you the low out of the whole gearing like the car had a low (numerically high) rear end, but still allowed 1,500rpm, or less, highway cruising.

BUT, in order to achieve fuel economy standards GM 6-speeds came with a feature called skip shift. If you drove the car casually like they do for fuel economy tests, when you pulled the shifter back from 1st gear, a solenoid activated that blocked 2nd and 3rd gears so the gear shift lever went from 1st to 4th directly. This puts you in 4th at just over idle, which was only barely tolerable because you were driving a monster V8 with gobs of torque. It certainly took all the fun out casual motoring. If you accelerated briskly, which the EPA fuel economy folks would never do, than the skip shift feather automatically disabled itself.
