In real dollars I don't think it's topped all-time highs...yet...and it hasn't been prolonged. And there isn't a supply problem -- at least not one that has people filling up on alternate days in long lines. The problem wasn't all about the cost, it was partially the inconveinence of filling up.
Another thing...as much as I hate to say it, and I've looked up the numbers...many SUVs are more gas-efficient now than cars 25-35 years ago. Not by much, of course, but even a few extra MPG will delay the onset of a mass exodus from the SUV...to some degree, they may have already. Plus people had no excuse back then, they had a big car because big cars were normal. People have SUVs now because they believe they 'need' them, so they will cut them more slack.
Everything gets a little more expensive as fuel goes up, too, so that will encroach on people's feelings at the pump. We're not going to see the reaction to fuel prices in consumer buying habits first -- it'll be the truckers, livery drivers, etc., whose margins have been whittled to nothing and whose bottom line is massively impacted by even a small bump in price.
