I understand the issue for somebody with a pickup truck or a 8 year old Explorer they picked up cheap.
But there are plenty of 'pickup' trucks going out the door at $40K, and $40-$50K SUVs are thick on the ground. If somebody is willing to sign up for a $600 a month lease rate to get the Lincoln Subdivision of their dreams, gas isn't a big issue. At 15 mpg and 15K miles a year, they go through 1000 gallons in a year. If they could handle filling the tank at $1.80, at $2.50 that's only an additional $700 a year. Yeah, that's a lot of money for some folks, but it's half the price of factory DVD player they installed, and a quarter of the price of the fancy Navigation system they couldn't live without.
If trucks for the price of a Corvette doesn't scare folks away, then the gas mileage issue won't either.
