I have lived in the Midwest for 20 years and I'd say that the salt / rust issue is bogus. I've taken cars to 200k miles with no rust and minimal washing and no waxing. Heck, I've kept a muffler for 10 years (stainless). The only rust I remember was in my '89 Grand Am (sigh) a couple years in its life, a design defect common to all Grand Ams, and NOT caused by snow (water collected on some plastic piece in the pillar).
After four years in Louisiana in the early 80s, I'd say that the long stretches of sun damage, salt (coast areas), and (personal opinion) reduced maintenance :-) of Southern cars does not make them any less 'stressed' than their Midwestern brethren....
