I have to disagree with your statement that leasing is not consumer friendly for a number of reasons. As a Saab sales manager, I do the math every day with people buying/leasing new Saabs. If, like many new car buyers, you buy a new car every few years, leasing is the way to go. It costs you less cash, and you are transferring the depreciation risk to the lessor. You can drive more car for the same payment, and not worry about having negative equity in your car when it's time for the next one. OTOH, you won't have any positive equity either, but my CPA father said you should always try to avoid owning a depreciating assett...
I've also worked through the cash flows of leasing for 3 years then financing the buyout for 2 years, vs a 5 year conventional loan. Depending on the lease program subsidized by the manufacturer, you may wind up saving a couple of thousand $$ doing this.
However, in my experience, buying out your lease at the end may not be the smartest move though. Most people don't bother to check the market value, and may pay a couple of thousand more for their car vs. an comparable used car on my lot. This is exactly where you would be in trouble trying to trade the car in if it were conventionally financed.
If you're a "buy it and drive it into the ground" type, leasing IS a bad idea! Or if you drive over 18K-20K miles/year...
