So with everyone (else) whining about gas prices, and with only a couple VWs and one Mercedes available in the US market, doesn't this seem like a golden opportunity for SAAB to increase market share by bringing over the Turbo Diesel 9-3s and 9-5s from the European market?
This is from the SAAB UK site: "The Saab 9-5 is now available with a 3.0 V6 TiD or a 2.2 litre turbo diesel option. Our designers and engineers in Sweden have produced an engine that delivers performance without compromising economy. The Saab 9-5 diesel start at just £19,995 and with low CO2 it makes the TiD a compelling combination especially for tax-conscious company car drivers.
The secret behind the diesels' success.
The 3.0 V6 TiD delivers a torque of 350 Nm - equal to our 9-5 Aero, and the 2.2 TiD produces 120 bhp with a peak torque of 280 Nm. Both these new diesels are designed to combine performance with economy. For instance, the aluminum engine block and cylinder heads save weight. A compact engine design lowers the centre of gravity, increasing stability and control. And the management system produces a responsive performance. And the 2.2 TiD’s torque also helps reduce CO2 emissions – good news for company car owners in light of new emissions taxation regulations.
Awards & quotes
Diesel Car magazine awarded the Saab 9-5 3.0 V6 Tid as its ' Executive Diesel Car of the Year' for 2002. " The performance, refinement and efficiency of the gusty 24-valve V6 are what catapult it to the top of this competitive category.""
