The 9-5 carries more than the 9-3, which carries more than the 9-2X. My brother has an Impreza, which is basically the same interior space. It was totally inadequate for carrying him, his wife, and one child (and all the stuff a child requires to travel). It's been relegated to commuter duty, and the Legacy wagon does the hauling.
I would have no interest in a 9-2X, because it just doesn't carry enough stuff. A 9-5 wagon does. If I want high performance, I get a high performance car. If I need hauling, get a hauler (as in carrying a lot of stuff).
I see the 9-2X as being the light, 'performance' model. Will it steal some 9-3 sales? I'm sure it will. But side by side, a 9-3 and a 9-2X are very different - the 9-3 is a classy-looking sedan, appealing to those that like the look of Audis and the nicer looking Volvos. The 9-2X may look less like a Transformer than the WRX, but it still has the Japanese Boy Racer look of the WRX and Mitsu Lancer. The interior of the 9-2X may be better than the Subie version, but it's still not up with the 9-3 or 9-5.
The 9-5 is a larger sedan/wagon that will appeal to yet a different crowd. Most folks that are shopping a 9-5 wagon are looking at Volvo wagons, Audi wagons, and thinking about but not buying the more expensive Mercedes wagons. They're looking at high-line alternatives to mini-vans. If you're going to drop $38K on a car, you want some class and size.
It's not All About The Power. Most people want power in their cars, but the market segment that goes for power over space is small. Heck, the new Pontiac GTO has room for four and a great engine. I won't get into old vs. new GTO issues. But on the face of it, it goes like stink and carries people. Yet Pontiac has sold a whopping 1700 of them so far.
In America, there aren't many car companies getting rid of larger, more upscale cars in place of smaller, less expensive cars. OK, nobody is. Even Kia is making their cars bigger.
