I inspected and sat in the 9-2x last week at the dealership.
The 9-2x is not comparable. It seems to be a decent car that will probably sell well against the WRX and popular sport hatches (japanese, lower end european and american cars) among younger people and the young at heart.
For instance, the back doors are very light and I was offended at how light they are and would not want with doors like that. The interior seats are not wide (think sporty bolstering, but they are comfy) and are cloth. Cargo room is good for a car that size, but not great like a 9-5 wagon or a classic 900.
The 9-5 is in another class. Solid thunk to the doors like a mercedes, but not quite as good as a 9000. Much bigger interior, less bolstered and more accomodating leather, etc.. This is to compete against bmw, mercedes, audi, etc...
I can see used 9-5 sales perhaps interfering with 9-2x sales among young-at-heart buyers, but the young buyers want a WRX from Saab. WRX has a cult name from being in rally racing and video games, etc.. Stronger used 9-5 sales are good for the 9-5 line in general because it means more demand and higher used prices, meaning less money lost on leases, etc...
