The one thing the Japanese have learned is to built a product that the American public will buy. When they do make a mistake and don't listen to what the public and American management tell them, they come back with a huge success. Good example is the Honda Odyssey mini-van.
The European car companies have yet to learn that lesson and probably never will. I am convinced that they think if they just hold out long enough, the US will become another European car market. Porsche is about as close to giving the US what their management has asked for, but it is killing them to do so.
All this talk about GM killng Saab is missing the target. GM has kept Saab alive, it is the Swedes that have dragged their feet developing products and features for the US. The list is long and distinquished and my doctor has cautioned me about my blodd pressure.
There is a great book out there I would highly recommend called "Getting the Bugs Out". It is a historical look at VW in the US. There are many parallels to what we see coming out of Sweden.
Thank god they build good cars. They have a slant towards the Euro market, but good cars non the less.
