I am constantly traveling Boston to DC.
84 to 684.
684 to 287 across the Tappen Zee Bridge.
287 to the Garden State Parkway.
Garden State Parkway to the Jersey Turnpike.
Across the Delaware Bridge.
95 the rest of the way.
The key trick is to time your journey properly. ALWAYS DRIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. In other words, leave at midnight and arrive before the morning traffic. Alternatively, you have to travel during the day:
- If you are traveling south, you want to time your trip so that you hit the Jersey Turnpike south JUST BEFORE rush hour traffic. So leave CT at maybe 1:00 - 1:30 (depending on where you are in CT).
- If you are traveling north, the trick again is to be through New York right in front of rush hour traffic, but miss morning DC traffic. Leaving at maybe 11:00 AM should work.
Good luck. It really isn't that bad a drive.
