All the routes people have mentioned look correct, but IMHO there are a couple of shortcuts you could take advantage of. I would definitely recommend the Merritt over I-95. Instead of getting on I-287, I personally stay on the Merritt into NY where it becomes the Hutch, then take the Cross County to the Saw Mill which takes you to the GW Bridge and avoids all the I-95 traffic. Sounds confusing but just follow signs for the bridge and you'll be fine.
One other bit of advice, you might want to take I-295 in NJ instead of the Turnpike the whole way. Take I-195 west around Trention for maybe 5-10 minutes, then hop on I-295 south. Meets back up with the Turnpike at the Del Mem Br, and should have less traffic than the Turnpike.
The way back is when you will probably hit more traffic, because you have to pay tolls on the bridges over the Hudson. Make sure you have EZPass! I like to take the eastern spur of the Turnpike and use the lower level. It's all about the path of least resistance, go where everyone else is not :)
Have fun :)
