On the one hand, it's just a bike, if a hybrid strikes your fancy go for it and have a good time w/ the kids. But for what it's worth, a mountain bike w/ a low profile tread would be a better choice in my opinion: readily accessible replacement parts and near-indestructable re: hopping off curbs, steps, potholes, etc (hey, you'll start copying the kids after a while). The hybrids occupy this uneasy space trying to be mtn & road capable but poor at both (not like your saab). For years I quasi-road trained on my mtn bike w/ slicks (obvious mtn bike preference :o) and still prefer it for tooling around the neighborhood rather than my road bike. P.S. don't know the bikes you spec, but would *anticipate* the jamis having a nicer frame at that price point, the trek questionably nicer components - have your sales guy debate it for you :o) Anyway, just have fun.
