I come from the era when 10 speeds were new, and a really nice one cost $2-300. More recently, since I'm probably fixated in that era, I've picked up a couple of those bikes at garage sales for $5 and $50. I put $70 into the $5 bike, so it was actually more, but now has new cables, seat, grips, tires, etc.
Either bike works really well to peddle the 'hood with my 8yr old. A single speed would be fine. The hybrids you are looking at are probably pretty close to these old 10spds. I think they still work pretty well as good serviceable bikes. If you want to head out for a 20mi trek, they work well too. They don't like RR tracks, mud, or rocky mountain trails. But with 27x1 1/4" tires, they will handle most of what the 'hood and local parks can dish out.
In my town the quality bike shops that do repairs have dozens of these bikes for sale at around $100. I think you would be hard pressed to wear a good one out. If you do, then the $500 investment makes sense!
I'm a tightwad...
