Hi Chris
Everyone has had such good advice - I am just writing to encourage your adventuresome spirit. I am the same age and a passionate mountain biker. I come from an off-road motorcycle riding/racing history and needed a more eco-friendly sport for crowded Cape Cod. We have wonderful "knob-and-kettle" topography that creates fantastic single track woods riding. I go every day that I possibly can. My suggestions are to: 1) build up slowly using your perceived limits as a guide. You and your bike will become extremely fascile over time and the trails you will call routine probably scare you now. 2) Don't be intimidated by young, fast men and women blowing by you - do watch their techniques on challenging terrain 3) Join a mountain bike organization (I belong to NE Mountain Bike Association) - they provide resources, technical classes and work hard to maintain access. I was Chairperson of the regional conservation commission for seven years here on the Cape and worked hard with local clubs to secure permanent access to public lands for mountain bikers (over 20 miles of single track in the town of Barnstable for instance that is MAINTAINED BY TOWN EMPLOYEES! along with the local club for use by mountain bikers)- but many communities percieve mountain bikers as a problem; 4) Stretch-stretch-stretch -water-water-water; 5) Err on the side of caution - healing takes longer as a semi-old-fart... my hotdog wife broke her arm and tore her rotator cuff going over a jump set up by the "kids" - she has not kayaked in two years while recovering.
Peace,
Eric
