Last year I shipped a mountain bike from Chicago to Phoenix for $35 via UPS. I partially disassembled it (bars, seat post, front wheel, pedals) and put it into a bike box that a local bike shop was happy to give me (even though they have to discard them, another shop wanted to charge me for it). Greyhound might be cheaper but they don't deliver it.
