Just like Drew said, the wires must have been plugged in wrong. But how'd you rotate the cap? Did you have to file down that tab moulded into the cap?
Rotating the cap 180 degrees is EXACTLY the same as unplugging the wires & putting them back in 180 degrees opposite.
Your '89 has the empty distributor. There's no Hall sensor, NOTHING inside but the rotor. So there doesn't seem to be any reason or any damage from twisting it around. As long as you re-arrange the wires so it runs.
