This situation led me to do some research.
Larger rims with low profile tires need newer machines to properly mount the tire without tire, rim damage. The XL tires make this even more crucial due to the stiff sidewall.
Newer machines have synthetic arm heads and multiple arms so that the wheel does not get scratched even if the machine malfunctions. The location, design, and number of arms is important in putting these wheels on without a struggle.
The station that mounted mine only had a single arm and used two people with multiple pry bars to force the tire on (gouging the inner wheel rim in the process). Then they had difficulty beading the tire and used way in excess of the 40 psi max pressure for safely beading tires. I guess I should be glad they didn’t blow the tire up since my car and I were nearby.
I read and article by a machine manufacturer that distinctly warns against rim damage despite the fact that the owner may scrape a curb a few minutes after have tires mounted.
