To be honest, a week before the numbers were not working out like I hoped (this is supposed to be Saab's lower end/smaller hence less expensive car)... So I thought I would be headed in the used 2002 9-3 hatchback direction. Our 1999 9-3 has been so good to us, we want to find another one with as low miles as possible before they are gone... But the numbers clicked into place with Mike Lynch and Ted Bickler's along with some GM Supplier codes (like the ones I raffled on TSN in March) from SaabUSA. Althought I had sat in the car earlier, Elle and I didn't do a real test drive until last Tuesday when we took one out to Bay marshes corporate area around 6:30pm = four lane divided road = a lot of fun on a test drive. The test drive clinched it and I booked my flight to San Diego that night. Mike had allowed me to spec out what I might like in a 9-2X way back before the cars were even around but the dealers had to put in orders - even if I didn't want to buy a 9-2X... So, on my TSN checklist for many years has been to at least once own a brand new Saab. This was that opportunity so I did it using some of the equity we've built up living in our tiny Silicon Valley house these past 7+ years. Now, 550 miles later... I had a blast driving home. Traffic in HelLA was HELL, but from LA to home there were clear roads the whole way. I managed to meet Mike Lynch, active BB user, Ted Bickler, active TSN chatter, stopped by to see a high school friend in LA and made it home by midnight. Today, I'm suffering from a driving hangover which thankfully is receeding much more quickly than a real hangover... I might run to the store as my Diet Mtn Dew stocks are running low (growing older sucks... ah for the days of my youth when I could run a Big Gulp's worth of REAL Mountain Dew calories in the morning and thrice over in the afternoon)...
Now that we have our one 9-2X owner, I'm starting the process of opening the 9-2X BB in three phases. 1. An outstanding car magazine has given TSN permission to republish their 9-2X review. B. Followed by my own test drive review and 500 miles follow-on Real Life test drive. C. The BB goes live and for the early start, you'll have to email me with your handle if you wish to participate. The 9-2X BB will be started in the same way TSN was started - as a safe haven from USENET's "You should've bought a BMW/Volvo/Ford mentality". It'll be for those with a genuine interest in that model. We're not short on opinions about models, so the focus will be on test drives and regular problem solving and model experience.
Anyway, back to work!
