Darn fine question. In Service Date is critical Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Sun, 1 Aug 2004 18:36:02 In Reply to: So, if incentives on NEW are so good, then..., BrianD, Fri, 30 Jul 2004 21:44:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've been looking at '01 CPO wagons. Most places around me (Connecticut) are asking 21K for a linear/comfort package/automatic. These are cars with about 40K miles and in-service dates of late '00 to early '01. Yes, there may be "more creampuff" cars out there, but I haven't found any.
I haven't worked really hard, but I've gotten lots of resistance on dropping the price. Now, I compare that with an equally-equipped '04 linear for $27K (with 7K and $500 loyalty). So for $6K more, I get a new car. I've seen a few nice CPO cars, but most look just a little 'well used.'
The real trick with CPO cars is the In Service Date. Remember the warranty is up to 100K miles, OR 6 years from the in-service date. If you find a car with 43K miles and a 10/2000 in-service date, yes, you've got 57K miles on the warranty, but you'd better drive about 25K/year to hit 100K before the warranty is up in 10/2006- that's just a little over 2 years away. Now, if you can find an in-service date of 8/2001, then you've got 3 years of warranty. If you drive 15K miles a year, you'll run out of time before mileage - but it'll be close.
So, when looking at a CPO car, unless you're a traveling salesperson or a folk singer, the In Service Date is the critical thing.
