The newer full suspension bikes have come a long way to provide the cross country riders with full suspension without taking away the power to the crack from the softtail. I took the jekell through Lynn Woods for a test ride and was surprised at its agility to maneuver a ride ridden trail. There is still something lost in the softtail but not nearly as much as in the superV. I have a 10 year old Cannondale DeltaV1000 hardtail that I still love. A good front suspension is all I need. Although, as my butt ages, it is nice to have the rear suspension. I'm not sure if anyone has come up with a good rear shock lockout as of yet. My deltaV came with a front shock lockout which was awful. After three shock cartirdges later, I did away with the lockout mechanism and haven't missed it a bit.
Hardtail vs. softtail really depends on what kind of riding you'll be mostly doing. Carving some awesome windy singletrack like the Boston Folks have(i.e. - Groton Town Forest, Foxboro, and others), there is nothing IMHO that compares to the hardtail. Lynn woods still is my favorite for serious technical riding and I'd choose the hardtail as well. Now, for the downhill stuff at the snowhills, the full suspension rules.
As I digress...Man I miss Boston.
