My wife and I bought Nashbar Kid Karrier trailers for 2 of her sisters and brothers-in-law. They clamp onto the left chainstay by the rear hub, and have a large coil spring (poor-man's U-joint) connecting the clamp to the towing arm. No need to swap skewers, comes with a safety leash.
I know that these trailers will not see heavy use, and with this caveat, I'd recommend them. Inexpensive & nice design.
I've seen one instance of a "Fred" taking his kids off-roading in a trailer - Kmart bikes towign a 2-wheel trailer on fairly rough trails... the kids didn't look to happy about the whole situation.
On mtbr.com, one guy posted pix of a BOB trailer modified to accept a child seat, with a plexiglass windshield. Liability concerns aside, it looked pretty cool. I have a BOB trailer, and I don't think I'd fabricate the same set-up. Maybe with the IBEX model, but not the YAK. A wind/dust shield would be mandatory, I'd think.
I've heard nothing but good things about Burley trailers.
Good luck - JMJ
