Question for Mike Lynch

My younger sister drives a Saturn LS1 and we're having some issues with service over a broken motor mount...
The car is a 2000 and is out of warranty though it only has about 12K miles on it. Two weeks ago she hit a pot hole and the top motor mount failed dramatically. It cracked lengthwise sheering about 6 inches of metal. No other part of the car was injured. When we took the car in the Service manager said they would not cover the whole thing, becuase she must have done something herself to make it crack. After inspecting it, it became obvious that the kind of impact needed to break something like that would have also destroyed the car in the process. It seems apparent that the part had a flaw from it's original casting.
The local Saturn customer service center decided that we should be charged only half of the $240 replacement cost. My family feels like this is wrong because we were originally told that we would only be responsible because of something done to the car, NOT because it was out of warranty. Now they are saying because the car is out of warranty this is the best they can do.
How would I go about escalating this over the head of the customer service rep who doesn't want to help or to put us in contact with someone who can?
Have you experienced anything similair to this? Will the manufacturer typically cover the whole bill on matters of obvious defects on non-wear items, even when a car is out of warranty?
Thanks for your help,
Chad
