Here in the Puget Sound (Seattle) area, as well as most of the rest in Western Washington, we've had some of the driest summers on record the past few years. The heat has been record breaking a few times, though it's more the extended periods of well above average temperatures, along with the non-existent rainfall, that are doing us in. Many well established plants and trees decades old have been dying all over the place.
It used to be, you didn't need to water plants in this area during the summer, normal rainfall would be enough to get them through, except for maybe once in the course of the summer. Of course the grass needs a lot of water, but everyone (wisely, I say) just lets it go brown. These past few years, we've been needing to water many times over the summer just to keep plants alive.
Another downside of the missing rainfail is that smog/haze has been horrible. It was technically 'sunny' last summer, but you were lucky if visibility was more than 20 miles in supposedly clear air. This year has essentially been a repeat, though we did get one day of heavy rain last week, fortunately.
Of course, an upside is that the weeds also are dying out without water. :) But they always come back..
