I posted this one year report on "other cars" BB: Our Toureg was bought first day they came out--I had spent months checking out the competition and was convinced this was the way to go. We knew that VW was not known for reliability and have not been expecting to be problem free (sound familiar to Saab owners?).
Only glitch has been a recurrent problem with the tire pressure monitor system. Every few thousand miles it has had to be reset at the dealer--can't fix it at home. Now it is saying tires are flat. (turns out this was a recall, as were some other electronics--will be fixed tomorrow).
Great to have during the frequent downpours and street flooding in Houston (sealed to 23 inches of water).
Absolute Base model--no additional electronics, so maybe that's why we've had so few problems.
Positives: great highway ride, turning radius, beautiful interior, compact for a heavy duty SUV.
Negatives: gas mileage, a little fatiguing with lots of city stops, need a seat cushion for lumbar support (manual seats).
9-7 would have to convince me that it can get through high water as well. that's the only reason I can see to have an urban SUV.
vortex is a decent BB; learned a lot about other problems people are having. Not as user friendly as Saabnet.
Bottom line: The Toureg is off road overkill; gas mileage is a real issue. But the ability to get through high water is a premium for us. If it isn't for you, then the nearest competition size-wise was the Honda Pilot and the closest in terms of SUV was the Toyota 4Runner (which is a little more exciting); both should be better on mileage and reliability.
