Hi VV (great name BTW)
My wife does the majority of the Touareg driving and most of it inside the loop and short hauls. Some highway--Hill Country or Galveston every other weekend or so. She really likes it (as do I)--but admits to getting a little tired if there's a lot of short trips during the work day. We agree it's been worth it: already once she has been one of the few parents able to get through to pick up our daughter in school because of flooding and she did the hauling for a bunch of other parents.
Real world driving: 13-16 mpg. Base model V6.
Put 12,000 miles year one.
I would probably recommend the electric adjustable seats if it doesn't come with too much else. Don't know about the air suspension--I think it might be a little more compliant and might make all the short trips a little more tolerable, but don't know about reliability. Can lower it when it isn't raining and raise even higher than ours if you need to. It can really start to add up, but I have to admit I saw an incredibly beautiful white with tan interior loaded V8 at the dealer last week that was very tempting. But then I was reminded we haul three big black dogs around on our trips. So I am perfectly satisfied with the base model.
