Dinner at Slanted Door is a fine suggestion. Make reservations NOW or you'll never get in.
If you wanna see "the rock", make your reservations now.
My wife, sister, and mom love the flower conservatory by the Golden Gate park panhandle. It is quite neat, and your girlfriend may like it, too.
Don't spend too long at the Wharf. Get to haight ashbury or the mission to see some of the nuts who live in CA. Berkeley is a neat side trip, too. Wine country is an easy drive outta town. Dinner in Sausalito could be nice. Great views of the bay and the city. Santa Cruz, Monterrey, or Carmel are a nice day trip if you want to get away from the dense population of SF.
If you're into live music or the bar scene, pick up a copy of the Guardian or SF Weekly and they'll steer you right. I end up hanging out a live shows and dive bars, but there are plenty of swank hip bars to see or be seen.
As a SF Bay Area resident, I have to tell you to avoid L.A. :) I prefer SF. San Diego is quite nice, though. It's probably a 7 hour drive if all the moons align and you haul a$$. Realistically it's a 9 hour drive.
Enjoy CA.
