Pacific Coast Highway aka Highway 1 along the California coast from San Francisco, past Carmel and Big Sur, to San Luis Obispo, is among the most spectacular roads anywhere. Winding two lane road along the steep Califonia coast with incredible views. Not much tourist stuff to actually stop and see, the drive and the scenery is the thing, except for maybe the Hurst Castle which is best done as an all day deal.
My motorcycle friends insist that the way to go is to drive south so that you are closer to the cliff edge and get better views, me I think it's spectacular either way.
Couple of my favorite quick stops are Nepenthe, just a couple miles south of Big Sur, restaurant, art gallery, incredible grounds, and then there's Lucia, also further south of Big Sur, there's a restaurant and cabins, and just south of Lucia 3/4 of a mile is a New Calmaldoli Monastery marked by a big wooden cross, take the road up the hill two miles, the monks do fabulous paintings.
PCH adds a couple of hours or more depending on traffic versus taking 101.
