hey there!
I take it by range you mean alpine range? The closest to Melbourne is Mt Buller (2.5 hours by car) which is where we went. There are other mountains further north (up towards the New South Wales and Victoria border) like Falls Creek and Mt Hotham (about 4 to 4.5 hours by car). ANd there a re others near Sydney too - about (or as the cannucks say - abooot!) 8+ hours from Melbourne!
We only usually get a little over 2 metres of snow a year and only sometimes get poweder - nothing like a canadian winter eh? :)
New Zealnd is great to ski too - especially the south island!
heres a link to a few snow cam pics from around my area>
