I have to submit Quark docs, so that Prepress can adjust the spine width where necessary (I do book covers). They could accept a PDF, but then I end up with centering problems if the spine bulk ends up being off by even 1/32".
I found a document that Apple put out in July that spends twenty pages touting the amazing wonders of font management in OS X...then admits on page 21 that "for the strict requirements of design and production" you have to do all sorts of things differently. Yeah, I seem to have figured that much out so far. Apparently you have to extract the screen fonts from the FFIL, which has replaced the suitcase? I think? But it gets a little murky as to how exactly I do that.
This was supposed to take me an afternoon to do; it's now running into day four. And it's not so easy explaining to supervisors that this is not a waste of time, it's a completely necessary obstacle in the workflow that MUST be dealt with before anything else can happen. Even my buddy at the service bureau is stumped.
