I chose a Nikon Coolpix 4300 for a point and shoot. It also lets me do some manual stuff, which reminds me of the old 35mm SLR manual days. I also bought from B&H in NYC. They are great guys to deal with, and the price is fair if not the best. There are a lot of crooks out there....
I also bought a 5yr extended warranty from them. I've got an 8yr old that uses the camera more than me. I think we'll be using it.
I really bought the Nikon because I've used them for years. I like the name, I like the feel, and I like the flexibility. I also like being in a 'system', such as Canon, Olympus. The system changes over the years, but the logic seems to be similar. My next digital camera may or may not be Nikon. And if it is it may or may not be similar controls and logic, but I'm guessing it will. Good to look ahead sometimes.
Ari really has the right approach here. Check out the dpPreview reviews to get an idea if the camera you are considering is up to technical standards, and get an idea how others like using it. Then go checking them out in the stores. Pick the feel and features that are right for you. Then search for price, wait a bit and they will come down.
