GM paid for all of the cars. It was an elaborate product placement scheme...and an expensive one at that...Gm hoping that Oprah's famed golden touch will boost sales considerably on this new model. The market value of the cars is 270 million. This seemed like a good bet for them as a 30 second spot cost $70,000. Oprah, informercial style, spent half of her show on promoting the car. The engine, the coolness of the sunroof, etc...incidently Wall Street Journal reported that GM is also paying the sales taxes. The audince members will order the cars through their local dealership with color choice and desired options included. Those cars on in the lot were just product placement.
Oprah benefits from the mistaken impression that this results her personal generosity...and people these days are as guided by initial impression as anything else.
Only time will tell is the sales boost pans out for GM.
