You should check out all of your options in stores extensively as you suggest, and multiple times at that, but recognize that what you see in the store is usually not what you'll see in your house. The stores always have the optimal set ups in terms of signal source, signal strength, cabling, etc. and it is difficult and expensive to replicate that in your home. When I shopped around for my television I realized this but still hoped that the relative strengths and benefits of one brand over another in the store would be the same at home, but even that's not necessarily the case. The best thing you can do is check out friends' and neighbors' televisions and compare their pictures.

P.S. For Perspective: No, I'm not bitter about my TV. In fact the opposite is true. I have a 16:9 50" Sony rear projection LCD TV with an HD hook up and it's great. It definitely ranks among my top 3 toys (my Saab and my golf clubs being the others). The point is just to do as much objective research as you can before jumping in.
