Be even MORE careful with in-store evaluations Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 20 Sep 2004 10:16:28 In Reply to: Be careful with in-store evaluations, Justin34, Mon, 20 Sep 2004 09:11:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've noticed a major variation in picture quality in stores. Yes, it should be optimal, but that depends on the store. And who knows who has been playing with the remote. I've seen some sets really badly set-up in a store. So if they can be badly set-up, then they can also be marginally set-up. So if that Panasonic seems like a nice set, but the color, contrast, or sharpness seems a bit off, it could have been a kid playing with the remote, or just a clueless salesperson. Learn to check the settings yourself. Most of these sets come with multiple settings for brightness, color temperature, and sharpness. Make sure you're looking apples-to-apples. And check more than one store before you rule out a model.
That said, I've been running Sony for the past two decades. My first one ran 12 years before the brightness faded. My second one (still on it) is an older XBR that still looks fantastic. Sony isn't cheap to fix, but they're reliable - I've had only one problem in 20 years (and I fixed it myself). I think they have the best picture, but that's so incredibly subjective, it doesn't matter.
And if you think you don't need Picture-In-Picture, all that means is that you haven't lived with it for a while. I thought it was a stupid gimmick, and now I love it, and wouldn't buy a set without it. And if you get PIP, make sure the set has two tuners!
