I remember the US Jettas and what a big deal getting one from Germany was. I had an 82 and an 86 both from Germany, my sisters 3 jettas (92, 98 and 03) were all mexican and all fell way short.
The old conventional wisdom was: look at the VIN, if it didn't start with a W, run away. (Mex starts with '3' I think.) I think the US Jetta production was short-lived, 1987-88 only or something like that. Maybe a stopgap until the Puebla plant was done, because after that, most everything came from Mexico.
Be aware that the current 'Wolfsburg Edition' is made in Mexico along with most of the rest of VW's line, not in Germany as the name suggests. I know most of the diesels still come from Europe, and I think the high-end stuff (Phaeton/Touareg) may have other origins.
As for for VAG...It's all the same company...all of their parts are stamped with the VW and Audi logos. They were 'platform sharing' back in the late '70s, and if you look through VW sites, for each VW model, you can find 3 or 4 models across VAG's makes that share a floorpan (like the TT/Golf/Audi A3 or the Touareg/Cayenne).
